I have come to realize that my role in media consumption is somewhat of a contradiction. During the times I was burdened with depression and debilitating anxiety I would use social media as a distraction. Staring mindlessly at that 4.7 inch screen, swiping through pictures of people’s lunches and adorable babies in their monthly onesies. These social networks have a way of either muting the ugliness that’s happening out in the world, or bringing it to light and intensifying with every click. The contradiction for me is that now that I have gotten a handle on my anxiety, it is the exact same things on social media that once took my anxiety away that now creates it. I can complain about social network, but I also understand all its merit and worth, and ultimately has endless possibilities- both good and bad. It is this all powerful thing that I wish could be handled a little more responsibly by the masses.

Mass media is the world’s largest game of “telephone”. An old school game where you whisper words into the ear of the person next to you, and so on; eventually the original message is jumbled and often a completely different message is spawned. Players filling in the blanks of the parts they may have not heard or understood, and mixing in with what they think is real, or maybe even contrived (consciously or subconsciously). The fact that we share so much of this common experience comes with great power, and with that there is great responsibility.

This media era seems to be paradoxical, and anyone can have a platform to speak out and become heard. Unfortunately some will do anything to make their platform as large as possible. It is like being in a room full of people who are all trying to be heard, but everyone is talking at the same time. Inevitably, people are going to start screaming and whoever screams the loudest and longest will be heard. In social media “screaming” translates to doing something as shock worthy as possible.
The current ways of delivering news and ideas to the world differs significantly from the ways people relied on in the past. When we read from newspapers, or turn on the “five o’clock news,” we are agreeing to listen to half of the story. Knowing we do not have control over what part of the story is censored, which stories are being reported, and what stories are being left out. It is imperative that we do not trust everything we hear, or are being told. This can be easier said then done when we are bombarded with all these various forms of media. This is enough to make people suffering from informational sensory overload.  Freedom of speech is part of what makes up the fabric of our country. We don’t have to just take our information with a grain of salt, we can do a little more digging for ourselves and form our own knowledge and opinions. Activists can come in and help, or possibly hurt, where there is an emphasis on the word creditable with the phrase “creditable source.”  The internet and social media has taken the First Amendment and put it on steroids. This is why media activists, a person who campaigns for social change, are a very critical part of this time period. These people focus on something they feel strongly about and try to arm themselves with as much authentic information as possible. They can help to organize some of the chaos and abundance of conflicting data. Activists are some of the people with passion who take the beliefs we embody; but may not speak out loud about, and then they bring it to the forefront. Stripping away the censorship of new stories and find the stories that are being kept from the ordinary person.

Luckily, there are many amazing people in the world that work to try and make the world a better place. They are actively using these various forums to spread some of the greatest things in life; love, awareness, equality, and knowledge. Media activism has some insanely powerful methodology, including, the creation of audio and video investigations, spreading news and information about protests, the organizing of campaigns that relate to communication policies, and educating the general public.

In conclusion, I would like to end on a positive note and reflect on Hashtag activism. This is a term that was coined 12 years ago by media outlets, and it is referring to the use of Twitter’s hashtags for Internet Activism. This movement uses likes, shares, etc. to show support for a cause on any social media outlet. Looking back this activism has had tremendous success. Some examples; #WomensMarch; #BlackLivesMatter; #IceBucketChallenge, have had a large impact on the world. It is these sort of things that can make us realize and remember that this growing type of media can be extraordinary. That there are so many people in the world that are using all of social media’s potential for the better

How Social Media Plays a Big Role in Our Everyday Life

My role in social media is media making. I am a media making because I have seen a lot of adverting on social media that helps to grow many businesses. Social media helps your business to grow because there are a lot of  people on social media everyday. On  Friday alone, Facebook can have  1.15 billion people from around the world on it.

My common experience involves in shared mass media events by sharing and posting the production or events. They can hire famous person to talk about the event to increase its awareness so more people can buy it. For example, the Super Bowel that is  going to happen on 02-02-20 began the  advertisements  on television, Instagram, YouTube, and etc.

There are several example that shows illustrated for advertising on social media that I like to look at websites that help you achieve in growing your business. Also, I like to look at social media accounts about investing your money in stocks. In my spare time, I would look at Instagram accounts related to stocks going up or down and how to read the graphs if you are making money or losing.

Some ways social media covers acts of resistance and protest is by a journalist being at the site to cover the incidence. You can also find out what happened in the newspaper. Another way people can find out about resistances and protests is on social media like Instagram by posting on your story or by going live.

intro blog

hello, my name is Jose Vargas. I'm a person that sees the good side even in the worst situations. social media is important in our lives, even though i am not the biggest fan of it. i use social media very little. I'm more of an old-fashioned kind of guy. the only reasons that keep attach to social media is the communication and the news.Technology is evolving, and through social media anybody can know whats happening in the world. I use social media to communicate with my family. My relationship with social media is mostly informal. platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and twitter are the most informal for me, news travels the faster and frequently. My favored streaming service is Neflix, i spent hours watching it.

Social media is a way to get peoples attention. especially the youth, those that spend hours and hours looking at their phones. Using media the youth can be encourage to do a lot of good things for the world. One of many news that are in social media are shootings. the last one happened last year, where there were people who were affected physically and mentally. Because of social media, "Never Again" exist. Never Again is a gun control movement. social media role is to keep us well informed about whats happening, and this a good way to do it. gun control is something that needs attention. A lot of people are supporting this movement including me. We have a voice! and our mic(microphone) is social media, it helps us speak louder and clearly for more people to joined.

Katia Cueto Assignment #1

My name is Katia. No one has ever asked me who do I think I am. I know I’m someone that want to be someone in life. Create a legacy and achieve many things. I am a person who cares for others, who wants justice and world peace. I strive to do my best at everything I set my mind to. Social media to me is an open door to many different diversities that can help you in the future. I used social media to connect with my family and friends. I use social media to connect with customer as part of my current job which helps me interact with many different people. My instagram and Facebook is use it mostly to connect to people and share positive quotes which can help someone later in life. Influencers use their social platform as a form of networking with millions of people.social media has become a platform where people can make a difference with a simple hashtag.

As time progresses so does technology and the way people express themselves.Social Media gives a voice to the people who don’t have one. Online communities build social movements establishing the connection of persons worldwide to develop a base and gain awareness to the cause. With access to the internet and the fast-growing world-wide web. Online social movements brought awareness to issues both political and social which have been criticized by most but with just a simple hashtag, someone can make a difference. Many activists use social media to bring awareness to what they are expressing their concerns on for example the “Me Too” movement which is a movement against sexual assault. The global #MeToo movement has sparked significant social, cultural, and legal change, but many challenges remain. The hashtag has exploded social media, creating a public debate, shifting social norms, and concrete changes in laws and policies.

In media consumption today I find myself to be at a very far distance from it all. I wouldn't say I am clueless but rather I simply hate most mainstream social media presences. One thing I do have a stronger presence in is the meme community which I think bonds use very strongly, inside jokes that are shared with complete strangers that will never meet and considered dead once said meme format reaches the mainstream. Memes themselves have picked up a strong presence in the lives of everyone and they are easily shared and can spread different ideas and even satire. When it comes to the media portraying anything, it all depends on who it is and what idea the group is expressing. Mainstream media does nothing to hide its bias which can be shown with how they same story varies in titles between the networks.

When it comes to my presence in the world of social media, there is a clear distance and I have a lot of reason for this. For one I simply don't have the time to care about how everyone chooses to waste their time. The simple idea of a trend already bothers. Allow me to pick a side in the battle of what utter dog shit fast food chicken sandwich reigns supreme meanwhile slave labor is present in the world and producing for major brands.(click here) Another thing is I get bored from these things. My largest amount of screen time would have to be YouTube but I only really watch one youtuber who puts out two videos a day. When I am not on YouTube the remainder of my time is spent utilizing social media to have people notice my band which can be found @dignitarytheband at Instagram.com if you haven't heard of us it'd be a lot cooler if you did.

In terms of the rest of people social media seems to be an outlet to look for some kind of purpose. I find this to be very sad honestly that one's influence become purpose because not everyone will speak on a certain level to other people that sparks their interest so one cannot rely on picking up this influence for self esteem or purpose. Back in the early 2010's social media was the things that connected my family in Italy with us so we could speak without purchasing those horrible phone cards. Since then it has turned into a necessity for many to reach others to create an image of them self that they want others to believe to be true. Have others connect and relate to the facade version you created of yourself.

When it comes to the media and activists, it seems that their favorite kind of activism is the kind that gets nothing done. Everybody can handle some good old school quiet protest. The second any idea is slightly not to standard though that is when the labels start coming out. Wherever you stand there is a different label for you without even being heard. You want fair healthcare? What are you a communist? It really shouldn't matter what the media thinks at this point, whatever boomers are watching Fox news will be gone soon, whatever helpless rascals watching CNN will dwindle down likely from starvation due to not being able to cook a meal at home. The reality is more individual people are reaching a larger audience more consistently with far less resource then the media. Lets look at Pewdiepie the worst enemy of the media. Might have something to do with him reaching millions of people a day consistently while the media must resort the uses click bait for even a drop of attention. The attention of people focused in much different places today and the more skeptical people become of what they see the better.

When it comes down to social media, I can honestly agree that I am always on it from Facebook , Instagram ,twitter and just being on my phone in general . sometimes I just cant put it down or stop being on  my phone I look at Social Media as somewhat of a entertainment outlet for when I have down time or when I just want to be nosey. But sometimes a feeling comes over me as if as if all the social apps I use daily have me held captive , to the point that once I move away from it for just a few seconds its like I missed something. but my main purpose of being on these social apps is to  show the world my creativity, helps  me  Increase my  self-confidence also  I can empower others  to express their ideas, talent and I can also get that feedback and support from others around the world. Social media can also have that  ability to create lifelong friendships.

One thing I can honestly say is that social media is the number source for individuals to express who they are, stand for. that is when a voice is created. in this day and age we are being more attacked in what we have the right to do  Freedom  of speak . but with social media we get much more educated on different world issues, we come across different groups for example "Black Lives Matter" the empowerment of that movement making a difference in the African American Community was through Social media. they had multiple page /Groups that had petitions, meetings and issues that everyone can keep up with. Black Lives Matter Arts and Culture expands and explores this moment in art culture that is reflective of the 1960s and 1970s when the Civil Rights, Black Power, and Women’s Rights Movements, and efforts to diversify art institutions, dominated the discourse.https://blacklivesmatter.com/arts-culture/

I believe that I do have a HUGE role in social media consumption. I spend most of my time on Instagram but if I'm not on Instagram you'll most likely see me spend time on Twitter a lot or switching between the two. Other times I'm streaming videos on YouTube or watching Netflix/Hulu. I can say for the most part I have a social media addict, like I can go on for a few hours but not a whole day. Which is bad because it's like you'll never not see me on my phone scrolling down my feed or watching a video. The media just keeps me entertained and getting information about things going on in the world.

Thou my consumption of social media turned into an addiction, for the most part I use my media to post my videos. I make videos of random cool videos of my friends of us making memories. Which I feel like it makes others be inspired to go out and just have fun rather than be on their phones. Don’t get me wrong I do spend much time on my phone, but when I’m posting videos on my Instagram stories (not 500 videos in one storyI try to capture the cool places my friends and I go and what we make out of it
I think the way social media covers activists, act of resistance, and protests for the most part fairly.  They do a good job letting it be known that we are trying to have our voices heard in a peaceful way. Sometimes we are attacked and belittled as being aggressive when it’s nothing but peace.  Things like the “Black Live Matter” movement was something that African American millennials had made big on social media.  After the murder of 17 year old Trayvon Martin, the African American people started seeing how the Justice System was not really protecting us. An unarmed child who was minding his business was killed by a man who had no right to follow him. https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/black-lives
Social media helps these movements and activists in a major way. These bond people together who feel the same but can’t make it to the actual protest. It's like a protest online, which helps even more because you see how many people all over the world feel the same way or they are dealing with that same issue across the world. Sometimes social media can have a negative affect when people start making ignorant regards towards protestors and some news outlets giving them platforms for their negative remarks to be heard.
