Midterm Proposal

Jamie Caruso
March 16, 2020
Activist Interlop and Pranksters

My project is going to be focused around what I perceive to be the most impactful societal and civil issues that our country has seen. I would like to choose some of the major legality decisions that were powerful enough to change our nation for the better, these things are of major importance because they are revolved around problematic issues that are negatively affecting minorities; whether it be race, gender, sexual orientation, reproduction rights, etc. An example of a detrimental milestone that I would want to add to my calendar was pivotal in our countries development towards equal rights; Proposition 8. This proposition highlights the rights for the gay community and their constitutional right to get married and be recognized as legal couple. People need to understand and recognize that it was more than that. This quite possibly symbolizes the strongest step that has been taken for gays rights and has given this population a hopeful outlook diminishing ignorance and hate, and the possible production of full judgment free, open mindedness. Another idea I have for one of the months in my calendar that is something Our society has gone; and is still going through; the famously controversial well known case revolving around abortion: Roe vs. Wade. I want to put together a calendar that has a sequenced timeline of the different dates that something impactful has passed, these things are going to have the theme of equal, civil, gender, reproductive rights, etc. I want to go through each month and try and pick the most powerful thing that happened in that month, that changed the way we operate as a country. I am going to go at this project using my liberal ideology and try and figure out what major aspects have shaped how we run through our everyday life with some freedom because of the bills and such that have passed.
I want to make this so it shows us a more extensive type of calendar year past just having a month for woman and African Americas. Although I am a bit worried that I am going to generalize too much or not be specific enough. I don’t want to be all over the place, but I also don’t want to just focus on one type of populations civil rights. I was exploring the different areas that I believe are detrimental to our freedoms and pasts; reproductive rights, LGBT, voting rights, and beyond. I am not sure if I should add certain things that I believe are important/ have been important in growing as a nation such as marijuana, assisted suicide, pandemics, certain religion aspects included.
Something that I wanted to try and do, even though I am not sure how well I will be able to organize it, use certain specific dates to add smaller sub parts to the dates in the months that I am assigning different Propositions and passing bills. I know that the pictures are going to be so important to this calendar and that they can make or break the whole thing, I might try and use my own photography skills to try and represent the information I am trying to display.
I believe it will be important to have something tangible that shows 12 months of these huge moments in history, if we are able to look at it in this type of subject we will be able to realize that we have come far. Also that we can go farther, I wish I could incorporate the areas and specifics of these controversial topics that need to be changed so much, or one desperately more than the other.
I have been trying to find some sources with actual Propositions in chronological order but I am having a hard time, especially with some of the older milestones, because they do not have specific months. If anyone can think of the best way to organize the topics in a more compact way, my biggest fear is that I am going to put too many different topics and lose the heartiness of what I am trying to put out.
The artist I decide choose were not all painters, I tried to think out of the box, my list is composed of one musician, two actors/television show, an author, and an iconic dancer
(modern/ballet) and choreographer.
The author I choose was Gloria Jean Watkins, but she is best known by the alias; bell hook. I am so greatful that I was about to learn about her in class, her writing is one is by far one of the easiest works I have ever read due to the fact she is interesting and smooth she puts. Some of the experts and works and papers I have read are so polished and persuasive that they remind me of beautiful poetry.  She is the epitome of what one would think is the definition of an activist fighting to get the message out about true feminism and equality. She is best known for her writing but she wears many hats; social activist; philosopher; professor.
For my second artist activist I choose Robert Nest aka “Bob Marley”, he is the most famous singer song writer of the genre of reggae. I chose him because his song depict the struggles of economically and political oppression, during a time that man men did not care to speak out about these problems in such a creative and bold fashion. He was one of the brightest prophets and human rights activist in music with an open-minded progressive approach and his message revolved around love. One of my favorite quotes by him is “the most beautiful curve on a woman is her smile”. People found hope in his socially conscious music, a beautiful part of his work was that it was not just focused on his home country of Jamaica, he was the voice that spoke out for all poverty stricken third world countries. For these reasons and more I decided to choose him as one of five activist artists’.
It may seem unorthodox but my third activist and artist is based on a show called “Broad City”. This is including the two actresses in the show who are also activists and feminists; Illana Glazer and Abbi Jaccobson. This is not just a one dimensional television program, they use humor on this platform to entertain but to also speak about many topics surrounding equality of all people and they take a very liberal stance when it comes to social issues. This is a very clever way of subtly slipping in positive female ideology and strength of women who speak out about ignorance by making fun of extreme ignorance in a charismatic way. Off screen these two actresses do a lot of good and charity for many hot topics that need to be addressed, topics that shouldn’t even be a problematic issue because they should just be part of our rights as a human being, to be able to be the person we want to be, especially because many of these groups of people are just asking to be able to be allowed to express and be who they really are; while being free of judgment, hate, and violence.
The next person I used the representation of a person in the famous Norman Rockwell painting; Rosie the Riviter. She has been an iconic female who represents the strength of women and their importance in the world. It is very rare that a person has never seen this picture, people even dress like her for Halloween She is that much of an icon and representative of the important roles of the working female. She does this by staring in a campaign aimed at recruiting female workers for defense industries’ during World War II.  She was the original ignition of patriotism in females aimed at the idea that they could temporarily leave the home to fill the man’s place in society. This is a controversial topic and a slight jab at the ignorance of Patriarchy. Since the very beginning of her appearance she has inspired the female population to exceed the societal expectations.
The final activist that I have chosen is Martha Graham, who was known as “The revolutionary Mother of Modern Dance. I have hear of her in the past but I never actually looked into what her importance was until now. Luckily I did because I was enlightened about a part of the past where a women made an impact through the art of modern dance. At this time in history it was not the norm to do the type of dancing that she had done. She brought about a revolution with dance by ignoring the idea that women where just supposed to dance and flail their legs about and look pretty. The way she danced wasn’t exactly perceived as beautiful but people began to realize that she was not just dancing to focus on beauty’ she was dancing to represent a story and feelings of drama. Martha started a totally new type of dance where people were allowed to use their body in ways they never did before. A famous story is that there was a woman who had lost her child and when she saw graham dance she suddenly had a revelation and feeling of relief because she finally felt like there was someone else out their representing feelings that were not just on the surface, it showed tragedy and strength through movement and a type of entertainment that was not yet known to the world. Two years after he death a book was published that had the subtitle “An Anatomy of Creativity Seen Through the Lives of Freud, Einstein, Picasso, Stravinsky, Eliot, Graham, and Gandhi; some of the MOST prolific people in all of history.

I am excited to create this project, and hopefully it will portray my passionate feelings toward human rights that effect many of the minorities of the world and populations that are looked down upon solely because they are perceived as wrong just because they are different then the cookie cut idea of many hateful and ignorance people. I want to represent the people who have been wrongly put down and thrown to the wolves for no good reason solely because people are scared of different. I want to show that the sight needs to be corrected with all the eyes that flood this judgmental world.

P.S : Professor,
Do you receive my emails? I was really sick and couldn't do anything, then I had to take care of my mom post surgeries. I am sorry I was not in classes, I will be set now and present as long as there is nothing urgent that comes up again.

Midterm Proposal

Racism Brought by Covid-19
As the new year progressed the nation has fallen to a pandemic state because of Covid-19. Covid-19 or the coronavirus came about on December 31 and it was only seen as pneumonia cases but that soon took a turn for the worst. On January 11, China declared it’s first death from the new virus that appeared and has infected more than dozen of people. From what we know and hear from the news the whole nation is in a pandemic state and what is worse is the racism that comes along with it. The fear that this virus has brought is people starting to become disrespectful to asian americans who have no fault because of the comeabout of this virus.
From experience I have many asian american friends and the stories they will tell me is that whether they are on the bus, walking on the street or in a supermarket people will try to avoid them and give them looks. They are so fearful because what is happening they place the blame on Asians and start to victimize them and treat them with no respect whatsoever. This upsets me in so many ways because I have never liked anyone to be disrespected including people who I know and are in my life. Disrespect, intolerance, blaming people it is no one’s fault; yes it is understandable for people to be scared because of what is going on but do not tend to do negativity in this world. It has gotten to the point that fear itself is getting driven by the people and in NYC an asian man was singled out for wearing a mask.
Well isn't the whole country wearing masks now? It is the new norm because it is like a security blanket for many people and that it is understandable. But to single out only one person because he is asian is very disrespectful. There are millions of people wearing the masks to prevent getting the virus whether the person is white, african american, hispanic, asian or any different nationality everyone is wearing them. So why are many citizens only victimizing one group exactly and not trying to be understandable about the situation at hand? Whoever it is you guys are worried about the people because of where it originated then being worried about just taking yourself, practicing on personal hygiene and social distancing.
For my project proposal I want to create a hotline in order to help people who feel discriminated against, feel hurt and just need an ear to lend. At first I wanted to create a web group, how we do our online classes but that wouldn't work because many wouldn't like to show their faces. I have always felt that people are more comfortable talking to strangers than people they know because they do not want to feel judged by talking to people who are in their lives. To me that is understandable because everytime I had a problem I never talked to my family or friends; only to someone random who I would never see again because it almost feels like voicing a confession to the wind and it takes it away with it.
How I would set this up is use all my media platforms as a way to connect to the world and even go as far as using tik tok as a platform. I feel like this is a smart idea because there is a hashtag there and the person who made a video gets tons or thousands of views. I will use it to spread awareness and either talk live to people there or they can call me through a hotline that I will personally help establish on my own. I know it isn’t anything huge but as a psychology major my future job is to hear people, actually listen to them and try to give them the best possible advice there is.

Project Proposal: Me Too Movement

The main topic of my project is to address the importance of the Me too Movement which is sexual crimes against woman. My project will consist of an online magazine that will provide all the knowledge of what is the Me-Too Movement and information that can help both victims and general public that have been through sexual abuse. The ‘’Me too” movement was founded in 2006 to help survivors of sexual violence, particularly Black women and girls, and other young women of color from low wealth communities, find pathways to healing
sexual harassment and sexual assault consist of unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Legally, sexual harassment in the workplace is covered under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. preventing sexual assault is just a matter of standing up at the right time. There are several things anyone can do to help prevent sexual harassment. Employers should focus on creating  sexual harassment policies, identifying inappropriate behaviors, and giving employees the tools, they need to report instances of sexual harassment in the workplace. Companies can also provide sexual harassment training to employees. The educational system should also implement policies that protect sexual harassment victims and create resources on campus that may help those affected by an abuse.
Most sexual assault victims are younger people, with 54% of victims falling between 18 and 34 years of age. Women and young girls are the most frequent victims of sexual violence; 82% of all juvenile victims of sexual assault are female, while 90% of adult rape victims are female.
According to the National Women’s Law Center, black women experience sexual harassment in the workplace at nearly three times the rate of white women.
As someone who is pursuing the criminal justice career, my focus is on special victims and family studies. I think that sexual crimes go unreported and are not being solved correctly by the justice systems. Movements like the “Me Too Movement” is way to bring awareness and strategies on how to reduce the unsolved sex crimes. I decided to create an online blog/magazine that will allow people to express their own stories, seek information, and find strategies on how to stay aware and protect themselves when facing an assault.

Bill Cosby, Harvein Weinstein, and Larry Nassar have all. Been convicted to sexual assault due to the Me-Too Movement.

LGBTQ COMMUNITY

The LGBT community, also referred to as the gay community, is a loosely defined grouping of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, LGBTQ organizations, and subcultures, united by a common culture and social movements. These communities generally celebrate pride, diversity, individuality, and sexuality. LGBTQ activists and sociologists see LGBTQ community-building as a counterbalance to heterosexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, sexualism, and conformist pressures that exist in the larger society. The term pride or sometimes gay pride is used to express the LGBTQ community's identity and collective strength; pride parades provide both a prime example of the use and a demonstration of the general meaning of the term. The LGBTQ community is diverse in political affiliation.

In this project I will be focusing on:

Discrimination: I believe we all have been through discrimination, some have slightly been through it and some deal with it almost everyday of their lives. Not only people who are immigrants, other skin tones, and/or different from others get discriminated against. People from the LGBTQ community are also getting discriminated against on a daily basis, maybe not so much in the time we live in but it has been a big factor. Discrimination is something that we cannot play with, people get hurt with words and some tend to want to take their lives.

“Judging a person does not define who they are, it defines who you are.”

Then & now: We live in a world where it's very hard to do many things, the LGBTQ community is a perfect example for it. Back then around 60’s-90’s people could not express their love towards someone of the same sex. They were told that it was wrong and disgusting. Within those years we dealt with a lot of discrimination and hateful words. People around those times were very close minded. Within the years the community gave a major change and now people who are part of the LGBTQ community are more accepted, and are treated closely to how a woman and a man would be treated. They are more accepted. Now we have more people who are much more open minded and more people who accept the fact that people are entitled to love whomever they choose to love without any problem.

Their rights: LGBTQ people of all ages everywhere in the world suffer violations of their
human rights. This community is usually physically assaulted, some get kidnapped, raped and even killed. In many parts of the world these people could be arrested and also get to the point of getting executed. I feel as though I want to also focus on this because it's not right for others to choose who we should be with and who we shouldn't. I don't want to get more into their rights such as voting, buying properties etc.

I will Be performing: First I will be shirtless and people would come up to me to write hurtful word or comments. the reason why people would write hurtful words and comments is because before people of the community were not accepted. then, I will have people writing beautiful and word of encouragements now that people are more accepted and open minded. In The back I would have a Lion blanket. Lion to me represents fearless, strong, and empowered. The red blindfold I have in will represent the love in the LGBTQ community and how positive we should all remain.

I will be showing a before and after of how the community is treated.

Here are people who are part of the community:

Denice Denton
Electrical engineer, professor, administrator

RuPaul

On the strength of his TV shows, including RuPaul's Drag Race, and his oversized personality, RuPaul has become a beacon in gay, drag and transsexual communities.

Blake Brockington

High school teenager who committed suicide after prom.

 Ricky Martin

Fashion designer Gianni Versace inspired him to come out.

 Pabllo vittar

The Brazilian icon is a famous singer-songwriter who reached the top of Brazil’s pop charts in 2017… twice.

Acts of Resistance

March 23, 2020

Police brutality is major issue, there are death caused by this madness. Even though law enforcement is at fault for this, but that doesn’t mean that the public is not to blame either. My major is criminal justice. my dream job is to be an agent, but that doesn’t blind me from the truth. What’s out there. I love justice, and justice to me is balance between fairness and equality.  Unfortunately, and sadly when we talk about police brutality those are two words that are completely misapprehend by the police and the public. This topic is hard to talk about without highlighting racism and discrimination. That’s why I decide only to talk about the abuse police have been doing, and how us, the people, have been pushing them to do worst.
First, I want to start by saying that being a police officer is a difficult job. imagine taking care of your 4-year old sibling and the house at the same time. Hard right? One of the duties of a police officer is to take care of a whole community. That’s why it takes whole bunch of them to do it. We should as people, and as members of a community support them. Sometimes they get the dirty work done for us.
I stand on my words. However, that doesn’t mean that the system hasn’t been corrupt.  They are thousands of cases where the police have gotten physical with the people from their community, and almost killed them. People don’t feel safe, even with the ones that are supposed to protect us. Imagine getting imprisoned for a crime you did not commit. Imagine being beaten for a traffic violation. Police in my opinion are supposed to be leaders of their communities, without attacking the people in it. A question, how we suppose to count on the police to control violence when there are the one inflecting it? I am well informed, and I know delinquency must be control. However, not every 6-foot tall black male with a hoodie on is a delinquent.
Now, going back to what I said about the public. Like I said the police are not the only ones to blame. There have been police abuses provoked by the people. People that don’t like the way you look, the color of the skin, or how you dress. For example, the same 6-foot tall guy with the hoodie can be in his car listening to music, and because you didn’t like the way looked, or the music he’s listening to, you’ve decided to call the police. That does not excuse the aggression and the way that police officer acted. Just like society can’t be excuse for what they’ve created (discrimination, racism, etc.). after that happens, the ones affected are the police officers, what about us? the public. Like I said before, police are not robots, they are humans. That means that their judgement can be influenced by person. That means that if we as the public are less discriminating and racist, the police will be less corrupt and more careful, because they can lose their job.

Proposal
I want to do video exposing all the madness behind police brutality. With that video I want to get to communities, and people that have gone through that. I want to explain, how we, as society can fix that. How we can stop this injustice affecting good people, and good community. What I’ve said its just a part of what the real issue, and why this problem should be stop.

       Cases: police brutality

Robert Davis

Robert Davis, a retired elementary school teacher from New Orleans, was arrested and brutally beaten by police on suspicion of public intoxication. On the night of Oct. 9, 2005, just a little over a month after Hurricane Katrina, Davis returned to New Orleans to check on his family’s property and went to the French Quarter to buy cigarettes. There, he was attacked by four police officers who said he was belligerent and resisted arrest by not allowing them to handcuff him. The beatings were videotaped by an Associated Press producer, who was also assaulted that night. The officers were either fired or suspended for their involvement, but many of the charges against them were cleared.

Frank Jude

In 2004, 26-year-old Frank Jude was viciously beaten by several off-duty Milwaukee police officers as he was leaving a party. The group of men attacked Jude and his friend, Lovell Harris, claiming they stole one of the officer’s wallets that contained a police badge. Harris’ face was cut with a knife, but he was able to get free and run away. Jude was repeatedly punched and kicked, as well as stabbed in the ears with a pen. Even the on-duty officer who was called to stop the fight began stomping on Jude’s head. In the state trial, the jury acquitted the three officers charged. There was a great deal of community outrage and demand for a federal investigation. The federal grand jury convicted the three officers who were originally acquitted but did acquit the fourth officer.

The Central Park Five

This was a big case, even our president trump had something to say when it happened. A woman was raped at a central park in New York. This about five boys that were imprisoned for a crime they did not commit.  “After questioning these boys for more than 12 hours police got them to tell story that wasn’t true. Antron McCray, 15, Kevin Richardson, 15, Yusef Salaam, 15, Raymond Santana, 14, and Korey Wise, 16 who came to be known as the Central Park Five.”

Artists

Bryan Stevenson is an activist, writer, lawyer, and the founder of EJI. The EJI has help correct injustices, like putting kids in death row. He wrote a book, that explained how was and how it is now police brutality. He also helped a man that was unfairly accused of murder get out of death row.

Carrie Mae Weems is an American artist and photographer. She creates installations that combine photography, audio, and text to examine many facets of contemporary American life. She has done work on police brutality. The way she does her art, illustrates all the paint that the victims went through.
