Appearance Discrimination

Luis Candelaria

Acts of Resistance

“Acts of Resistance Paintings”

For my project, I have developed a series of 5 paintings that dealt with the struggles and triumphs of appearance discrimination. The reason I chose that topic is because I was not only heavenly involved with ridicule for my own looks, but I want to serve as an influence to those suffering the same dilemma. I wanted to captivate my personal experiences and potential advice to people knowing that they are not alone and that everyone should be respected appropriately. The message I wish to convey in my works is that our appearance may be a judgmental factor by others but we can develop outlets that can openly express our personal beliefs, feelings and skills to show that we aren't held back based on looks. Instead of taking ridicule and accusations by heart, we can see them as a pushing edge to acknowledge ourselves that we have more potential, more knowledge and more determination to reach our goals. As a result, we turn off our ears and eyes to not give them access and instead channel our inner desires and dreams into a new foundation. For personal reasons, I choose to not share my work openly to my social media and to the public. However, I shared them privately with some of my personal friends who were also struggling with self-doubt and disencouragement. They were lifted with the messages I tried to convey and were influenced to look on the bright side. These paintings are also beneficial for my portfolio because it shows that I can create visual expressions based on both personal experiences and hardships in our society. After all, ”We're the disloyal opposition that bangs people over the head and reminds them that the art world isn't this great liberal bastion of aesthetic quality, that it's subject to the same forces as everyone else and every other institution in society," (Guerella Girls, pg. 10). As such, not everyone can interpret the hardships we go through in our art. “For many involved in the arts, an artwork must remain opaque enough to invite a proper amount of speculation and guesswork. Confusion is appalled over the crass simplicity of the oblivious”. (Seeing Power). This is why my goal is to make sure my art is as clear and message conveying as it can be. I will be explaining each individual painting as well as their influences.

In my first painting, “Mirror Me-Roar”, I display a caricature of myself stripped laying in a bed next to a mirror of a fictionalized, ripped version of myself in the same position. Another notable difference between the both of us is that not only is the reflection’s leg width the same, unlike my lymphedema leg, but there is also the same color. The painting was a reflection on many of the experiences I had of being observed by the opposite sex. There were many occasions throughout my college life that I gained compliments by my face, but were immediately discouraged or disillusioned based on both my weight and my leg. Even faculty members at the school made remarks about my looks. They would look at my face and give me compliments, but the moment they looked down below, it’s an immediate difference of opinion. I had a huge sense of doubt as a result. I would often look into the mirror and wonder why I would get immediately judged because of my weight. I was also somewhat influenced by Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror song because I would also ask myself; should I just ignore them or should I do something about it to appease them? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PivWY9wn5ps) I’m still struggling with trying to piece the puzzle on that one.

In my second painting, entitled “Don’t Judge a Look by It’s Undercover”, I depict my swollen leg painting the Mona Lisa on canvas. My work experience and artist John Callahan were an influence for that piece. As stated before, another factoring struggle I had was finding employment. Although my resume and records were impeachable, rather than judging me by my skill-set, potential bosses notice my weight and leg and immediately decide that other candidates would work the job. I felt discouraged as a result because neither my weight or my leg ever held me back on my endeavors or ability to perform tasks. That’s one of the benefit factors of the internet as well. I could use my artistic ability to create works and share them with the rest of the world and people would look at them by the work itself rather than the painter behind it. This is what led me to gain several freelance jobs as a result. John was also on the same route as well. Despite his incapacitation due to being paralyzed, his cartooning ability helped him sustain work and even critical acclaims to more opportunities (https://www.wweek.com/culture/2018/07/18/cartoonist-john-callahan-was-offensive-hilarious-and-one-of-portlands-own-now-gus-van-sant-and-joaquin-phoenix-are-giving-him-his-long-delayed-close-up/).

In my third painting, “Eyeball Alley”, symbolism was heavenly used for this one. On the painting, you’ll see a kid wearing headphones walking past a pack of dogs. These dogs are all based on obstacles of authority and opposition. We have a doberman who is based on a police officer, which symbolizes hate crimes and domestic police brutality, and two dogs based on busybodies or discriminating citizens who made rude judgement. As you can see, the headphones on the kid helps share that he is not paying the dogs in mind and is continuing on the path. Shane Koyczan’s poem “To This Day” as well as Kevin Smith helped influence this work. Rather than succumb to ridicule, Shane acknowledged that these criticisms would never have an impact on his life. It’s best to ignore and walk past them so you could focus more on your goals and livelihood (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltun92DfnPY). Kevin also shared his experiences to the public, which influenced several protests as a result. He didn’t have to fight back but he didn’t necessarily back down either (https://twitter.com/thatkevinsmith/status/9079110598?lang=en). This shows that he holds self-respect for himself and that he wanted to let people understand that we should all be treated fairly.
For my fourth painting, Troublesome Trianthalon, it is based heavily on the struggles and upbringing that Wilma Rudolph had throughout her life. Despite dreaming of being a track athlete, Wilma was held back on many different factors (https://timeline.com/wilma-rudolph-broke-barriers-and-expectations-when-she-won-the-olympics-c3e5de2d412). Her financial instability, African-American background, early labor development and the fact that she’s female were all drawbacks. But Wilma was too determined on her goals and as such, was able to win several bronze medals in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and was renowned as the first American athlete and woman to win three gold medals in each event. For the painting, I depicted Wilma climbing on top of the mountain attempting to reach her goal while her past hardships, depicted as boulders, keep trying to get in her way.

For my final painting, “Listen, Accept and Respect No Evil”, I made a simplistic representation of three monochronic statues that have similar poses to the three wise monkeys. Behind them are small symbols of personifications such as mouths, ears and eyes with several hues and colors all behind a rainbow based color. The statues represent people who have an ignorant and critical sense of direction. They see the world in black and white; refusing to adapt or look the other way. But the colors and symbols are surrounding them in an attempt to open their world and reach out to them. Kathy Bates helped influence this specific piece because her raising awareness on her lymphedema condition caught the attention of many people and influenced them to understand that even though the condition is very serious, she is still human; no more or less. (https://www.survivornet.com/articles/actor-kathy-bates-says-even-holding-up-a-book-is-hard-due-to-lymphedema-after-breast-cancer-surgery/) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWcZqQXBOOM).

For summarization, my message in my works is that our society may struggle by being judged by our looks, but we should develop an outlet to not only bypass them but also create a new ideal to embrace our inner feelings and skills openly. Judgements don't come naturally, as all of us have an influence from others in one way or another. For example, “Most of us learned patriarchal attitudes in our family of origin, and they were usually taught to us by our mothers.” (Understanding Patriarchy). Much like patriarchy, opinions are often developed by outside influences such as politicians or even close relatives. But just because we gain that specific ideal doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily the right ideal. Rather than succumbing based on discriminatory decisions, we should turn the other cheek and keep moving forward. This is the primary reason why this topic is very important to me. My leg and weight doesn’t make the assumption that I am a weak target. I accept my faults and embrace my craft and I get respect for it as a result. Regardless of how we look, where we come from, our background, we all bleed the same blood and we’re all human; no more, no less. My initial plan is to also share my paintings in many different platforms and support groups with others who are going through the same situation that I’m also in because everyone deserves a helping hand. I do not see my leg as an obstacle, but as a kickstart to keep striving to my goals and live in a healthy and peaceful world.

Final Poster Project-"Depression Free Is Where You Need to Be"

                                                                         Full Proposal
My final topic proposal is about "Depression." I had chosen this topic to make into a project because I had been through depression in my life before. Everyone deals with depression every day in their life. It is a mental health disorder that can mentally and physically affect or destroy an individual. We as humans need to pay attention to the little or sneakiest causes of depression to prevent us from being so stressed out. This is why I decided to create two separate posters of depression. One poster will contain the main causes of depression along with the artist-activists. Another will be about the 9 sneaky causes of depression. Depression is not a disorder you can get rid of easily just like that, it is a disorder that takes time to heal. For example, when a person has a headache, he or she just take a pill and it goes away. However, when something you have deeply affected you, he or she can't just take a pill to make it go away automatically. Therefore, I will also create a twitter account to reach my audiences. I will share with my audiences when I was at a stage in my life facing depression from my brother passing. It was the most devastating moment in my life and I will never forget. My brother had passed away at a young age, but now he in place, where I know he is safe. Furthermore, with my twitter account, I hope to get my audience to express what's going on in their life or at least to see what creativity I made for them. My message is not to go through depression alone, knowing you need help because without my family I would not know where I would be right now. This fits into my portfolio career because it falls into my major, which is sociology. With my major, it talks about social problems, and depression is definitely a huge social problem. This project helps solve a person-way about dealing with depression and keep cautious. Depression is like a poison that can rotten our whole environment and we must change that. By changing and developing ways to make all individuals heal from the poison can bring back our environment to life. The main key in life is how you live it. In order to live it, you have to be living. So from now on, no more deaths, no more sorrows, and no more giving up. It is time to get the help you need, to make a change, and build.

The Aftermath of A Pandemic
The topic of that is in everyone’s mouth at one point or another throughout day at the moment, is about the ongoing pandemic; COVID-19. I thought that this would be the best project to present right now as it is affecting a lot of things that people do every day. However, I did not want to focus on what is going on right now but rather what I feel can happen in the future. As, obviously I cannot tell the future I used the knowledge that I had plus the research that I did, to give my thoughts and insights into what I believe could be affected in the aftermath of this pandemic. I did this in the form of a podcast.

A lot of people today, including myself, do not like to necessarily read all that is put out on trade journals, articles, etc. I prefer to watch videos as that is the way that I consume media the most. Video Podcasts for the better part of a decade, have been a main part of my day. Whether its movie news podcasts such as “The John Campea Show”,(who taught me how to transition from topic and ask the questions that needed to be asked in order to have a better understanding on each topic) or commentary podcasts such as the, “The Joe Rogan Experience”, (who taught me to just sit down and have an honest and open conversations on things that are going on in the world) have influenced the way that I consume media, and has inspired me to do a podcast on this topic. Podcasts have developed into more than just a form of audio to listen to go about your day, but it has also become a sort of art form. Comedic podcasts transcend old media into new media, as comedy is a form of art and by making that comedy more accessible in the form of a podcast, the art is appreciated more often. Apart from the inspirations that led me to making this podcast, the thoughts that have been running through my head for the better part of a month allowed me to make the decision to best express my feelings and thoughts on this subject through this medium.

The topics that I touch on in this podcast are as follows: Healthcare, Economy, Daily Lives, and the Entertainment Industry. I chose to bring on 3 of my closest friends who I felt can best articulate their thoughts and opinions on each topic, but that can also inform the audience by experiences that they are going through themselves. I am media major and my goal is to become a movie director, and what I have always thought and believed are the best films, are the ones that allow you to connect and be able to put yourself in that persons shoes and feel and understand what the message is that they are trying to convey. This was my goal and my attempt at doing with this podcast. When watching or listening to podcasts, I always enjoyed the ones that allowed me to think about the subject while not being bombarded with either information that I did not understand, but also allowing me to make my own opinions by being shown a certain amount of information that I could relate to.

In the end, my goal was to make the podcast as relatable as possible by allowing to people feel connected with the people behind the camera, but also being able to teach people more than they already know. I believe that by creating this podcast, it helps and adds to my current portfolio as this is a way of content creating, and allows for myself to breakout of my comfort zone and appear in front of the camera and become more versatile in my craft not only behind the scenes but in front. I am not going to sit here and pretend like I was an expert at the topics that I was addressing but I tried to interpret in a way, that made me not look like a fool in topics that I had no knowledge of. I believe that by making this conscious decision and putting more emphasis on the opinions and experiences that us the makers of this podcast, it would reach a wider audience other than just the people in the confines of this class.

Fight Against Sexual Violence

Tiarah Forester

My Project is centered around Sexual Violence. According to recent statistics given by The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), “Nearly 1 in 5 women (18.3%) and 1 in 71 men (1.4%) in the United States have been raped at some time in their lives, including completed forced penetration, attempted forced penetration, or alcohol/drug- facilitated completed penetration.” This is only a rough estimate because not all survivors of sexual abuse have come forward or reported the incidents. If Sexual abuse is such a major issue all over the world then why is it treated as a taboo subject? “Most female victims of completed rape (79.6%) experienced their first rape before the age of 25; 42.2% experienced their first completed rape before the age of 18 years.” Why is our youth forced into silence for the heinous acts performed against their will? Why are we not doing enough to make sexual abuse survivors comfortable in speaking out or reporting these inhumane acts? These are the questions that fueled me to dominate this project. So that I too can make a difference and fight against this social issue.

My Project

The goal I have is to comfort many who have been affected by sexual violence. I plan to show these survivors that they are not the only ones, showing them that it's okay to speak out. I created a collage of famous men and women’s faces from around the world. Celebrities that we see daily and many that we idolize, who have also been subjected to sexual violence. Faces of celebrities such as Terry Crews, Lady Gaga, Viola Davis and so many more, form the words “I Survived”.

We are not victims but survivors and I want to make that extremely clear. The word victim only feeds into the feeling of not being brave or strong enough to speak out! I want all who come into contact with my piece to see how many lives are affected by Sexual Violence. I want those afraid to speak out to view my piece and see that they are not alone. Even those we idolize most, are going through this trauma. Hopefully, those impacted by my piece will see it's not as taboo of a topic as we think

I created this poster digitally due to quarantine and lack of supplies. In order to reach a broad audience I posted this visual on my Social Media Platforms such as facebook and Instagram and tagged Sexual violence awareness promoters. I also used famous hashtags such as #MeToo in order to reach as many people as I can possibly reach. My hope is for my post to blow up all over social media through reposts and engagement. For the Facebook post I also attached a donation link to a famous sexual awareness organization. This quick link allows anyone who comes in contact with my post to make a donation to aid in the funding for huge campaigns, protests that relates to sexual violence awareness as well as survivor support funding.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/100004479612918/posts/1560558474103458/?d=n

Post quarantine, I plan to have an outlined handprint on a corresponding poster board. This poster board will be located on campus, if approved, With the title "I pledge to fight against Sexual Violence". Next to this poster will be a teal (The color for sexual abuse awareness) paint tray in which students can Place a handprint anywhere on the poster board. Wipes will be handed out to those following this procedure. So even when they wipe their hands there will still be that slight stain of teal. To remind them throughout the day of their pledge. I also plan to go straight to the city where Sexual Abuse is at an all-time high, New York. This is where I will bring a duplicate poster with a handprint outline and film a video, asking those to pledge. I will post that video on YouTube and ask my community and peers to broaden sexual violence awareness. Our survivors don't have to suffer in silence.

Inspirational Quotes

“These activists focused on political realities like gentrification, the prison-industrial complex, and immigration”(Thompson, 46).

This quote stood out to me mainly because it made me realize that not all activists focus on the same issues. It wasn't until now that I realized that the prison industrial complex is a huge issue in today's society. I always knew it was an issue but when bring up issue in society this did not cross my mind.

“Veterans would warily circle the project trying to smell out its politics. Was it a political campaign or a marketing ploy? Generally, after about an hour, they would walk up to Harvey, begin asking some questions, and end up staying all day, unloading sorrowful stories”(Thompson, 52).

I pulled this quote mainly because it shows how much art has such a powerful impact. To hear the soldiers transition from being skeptical and closed out almost to then being so open and willing to share. It shows how much the art pieces reached out to the soldiers. It connected with them. There is nothing more beautiful than art that connects to a human being. This piece inspired me to create a piece that would give my targeted audience the same feeling. I want all sexual abuse survivors to come across my project and emotionally connect to it.

“The Mobile Intervention Units (M.I.U) are built onto lightweight trailers as a set of

aluminum parts. When pieced together they produce a temporary refuge for sleeping.”

I pulled this quote because looking at this picture you would never believed that it was made out of aluminum. I saw that even the most simplest materials could make a huge impact. This inspired me to use simple materials and design it to have a huge impact. Which is why I chose a paintings and pictures of famous celebrities. Two simple materials that together creates a beautiful message.

Inspirational Projects & Artist

This portrait is known as "Faun and a girl" it was created by an artist named Max Slevgt. This was one of the many portraits I came across during my research and had to include in my project. It is such a powerful painting because you can feel the pain and reality of sexual abuse within one glance.

This painting is known as "Nymphe enlevée par un faune" was created by an artist named Alexandre Cabanel. This portrait is strong. It is another human representation of sexual abuse. The picture displays a beautiful setting but it is an ugly deed taking place. Which makes it stand out even more. Sexual violence is never beautiful no matter who is involved or where it takes place.

This painting by Valerie West-Rosenthal is call "Trauma", as you can see this painting has very deep meaning. It shows how sexual abuse causes so much trauma. Many Survivors never feel safe or the same after the act. Many develop anxiety and ptsd post abuse. Sexual violence is very damaging.

This picture by Mark Anderson speaks in volumes to me, not many people really believe that men get sexually abused. It so happens that many men get sexually abused and are scared to come out due  to the belief it will decrease their "masculinity". We should definitely work on our perception of men so that they are able to be more vulnerable and comfortable to report the hennish acts performed against them. Their pain matters just as much as a women. The trauma is just as grand. Sexual abuse can happen to anyone and we should be more aware of that.

This painting was uploaded by Syed Ali Wasif is known as “Nightmare of a gang rape victim”. Just like the title this image is graphic. He we see a women’s body literally being disformed by multiple men. It really gets deep into the emotional and physical affects that these survivors are forced through. I believe the ghostly like view is to show that even after the act is done, the women still under goes the pain from the trauma. This image caught my eye immediately the use of colors even feeds into the sadness the image is displaying. Very powerful piece.

My topic is about racism and persecution because they exist in almost all cultures. Some people are still not aware
of such issues, admitting they are not racists, while their actions and
words prove another point of this deal. Unfortunately, even now, there
are lots of people who find their race better than another, making the
relationships unequal in all aspects. In my view, all people regardless
of their nationality and skin specifications should be treated in the
same way, equally.

Nowadays, in our society, racism problems only increase. It is
presented almost all over the world. The reason why mankind is so
influenced by the racism issue is ignorance and lack of knowledge.

My message is that we have to Stand up to racism, isn’t easy, but it’s the right thing to do. Whether you're in school, or the workplace, challenging accusations, assumptions, and stereotypes is a good way of letting people know it’s not okay to be racist. Remember, sometimes people can unintentionally make comments that appear racist. Standing up to these comments can be a great way for people to learn about the negative impact they’re having. You need to feel comfortable, safe, and calm. When you stand up for yourself or others, it's a good idea to approach the situation as calmly as you can and to make sure that you feel safe first. Being willing to have conversations about racism creates room for discussion and change, whereas going straight into a screaming match is usually counterproductive.
Certainly, there is no perfect solution to the racism problem. Maybe it
will exist for a long time now. The only thing we can do is to limit its
extent and expansion. The best way is to not be indifferent and start
being well-educated. We have to think twice before saying something
offensive concerning race, nationality, etc. Only tolerance and
mankind's intelligence can help to tackle racism issues.

My Massage about the persecution that my lord Christ suffered, not for doing what was wrong, but for doing what was right. His crucifixion freed us from the power of sin. With this incredible burden lifted, we can now concentrate on following Christ’s will for our lives rather than on our own needs.
This is a verse from the bible that explains the persecution that exists in our religion.
We don’t know what we will have to deal with in the days ahead. But the Bible is clear: Difficult times are ahead (2 Tim. 3:1). Thankfully, no matter what happens, we know that nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God” (Rom 8:39) and our suffering produces “an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison” (2 Cor. 4:7-18).

As an Egyptian girl who lived in Egypt for 15 years, I have
faced many kinds of persecutions since I am a Christian. In my
school, there were always discriminations between Muslim females
and Christian Females. For instance, if a Christian female or a Muslim
female doesn’t wear their school uniform, only the Christian female
gets punished and the other one is left free. Discrimination against
Christians is a huge issue the whole world should give attention
because as human being we should have the right of freedom to have

faith in any religion. I believe that a country that has people who think
they defend their religion by persecuting Christians is a country that
needs improvement in education. As students, we learn everything in
school, then after we graduate, we apply what we learn in school in
the real world. In Egypt, Christian students are being oppressed by
being forced to memorize some parts of the Quran since these parts
are major sections of the Arabic Language exams. People may not see
this as a kind of persecution since persecution in their mind means
killing or shooting people with a gun. However, it is still a type of
mistreatment that Christian students must deal with within their daily
life.

In December 2013, a Christian girl whose name is Engy moved
from Egypt to the United States dreaming of a better future, better
education, a safe life, a clean environment and a good job. In addition,
her main reason for migrating to the United States is to escape
violence toward Christian females and persecution toward Christians
in Egyptian society. She wants to live in a country that allows her to
have the freedom to believe in any religion she chooses without being

offended or oppressed. She wanted to be able to go to her school
without the guidance of her parents since it was not safe for a
Christian female to walk in the street alone. Energy’s deprived right
of having the freedom of religion in her native country can be seen in
“One in three Christians face persecution in Asia, report finds” by
Harriet Sherwood, and in “ISIS Says It Was Behind Deadly Attack on
Christians in Egypt” by Declan Walsh and Mohamed Ezz. These two
articles show that Christians suffer from different types of persecution
in the whole world and throughout many different ages. In the past,
the early Christian people in the Roman empire were persecuted due
to not worshiping other Gods other than Jesus Christ. Furthermore,
during the high Middle Ages, there was hatred between Christians and
Muslims which existed until these days.

The persecution of Christians nowadays is explained by
Sherwood who writes about how the government in China controls
religious worship, how Christians in India are oppressed even though
India is a country that avoids violence and also includes persecution
of Christians in North Korea. In addition, The animosity between

Muslims and Christians in recent time can be proved by Walsh
and Ezz who write about the attack on the Christian Coptic’s in Egypt
and the bombing of many churches in different regions of Egypt, and
also, they mentioned the consequences that might result out of these
attacks, not only on the Christians who live in Egypt but also on the
whole country including Muslims and Christians.

Christian people were under threat from Muslims for many
years since the origin of the hostility toward the Christian people
started with the threat of the Muslims in the Byzantine Empire. This
caused the Christian people to try to find some ways to defend
themselves. The Christians did the Crusades which created animosity
between Christians and Muslims that still has repercussions to this
day (lecture notes). Some people may think that Muslims are the ones
who are defeated by the Christian Crusades, but in fact they are the
one who caused threat over the Christians first so the Christians were
just trying to fight for themselves as any other denominations or
group of people will defend themselves when there is war or threat

against them. A similar kind of persecution and maltreatment toward
Christian believers exist nowadays. This can be verified by Walsh
and Ezz who states: “gunmen opened fire on three buses soon after
they left the Monastery of St. Samuel, in the desert south of Cairo,
killing seven people in one bus and wounding 19 others in total,
according to Coptic Church officials” (Walsh and Ezz). In Egypt,
Christian people go to the Monastery to pray and to visit the monks to
take their blessing. Above, the author uses the phrase “soon after they
left the Monastery” to show that the gunmen deliberately wanted to
kill Christian people and not just any random people since it is known
that the people who go out of the Monastery are Christians. This
demonstrates how Christians were the ones who were targeted by the
gunmen. The authors employ statistics to assert their argument and to
present the fatal consequences that result from the attack. People
usually in Egypt go to the Monastery as a big family that includes all
the relatives. When seven people were killed and nineteen people are
wounded out of one family, this family is being destroyed even if
there are some members survived, because these members may be
children or wives whom their own supporter of the house was killed

or wounded. It is not just about the people who get murdered but also
about the fate of the family in the future and how this family is going
to be able to make a living. Christian is not just persecuted by being
killed but by also being subjected to accept a life with having
disabilities or not having a job which will lead them to become poor
and have no money to send their kids to school or even having
money to feed them. As a result, Christians are oppressed and
threatened by Muslims in recent times as they were persecuted in
early Christian life in the High Middle Ages.

People who truly believe in Christianity would not mind
sacrificing their lives for their faith since they believe that dying for
Christ would lead them to heaven. During the age of the Roman
Empire, Christians did not believe in the Roman Gods and refused to
worship any gods other than Jesus Christ. The Romans’ anger was
aroused against the Christian people and killed many Christians since
their refusal to participate was seen as an act of treason, punishable by

death (lecture notes). This explains how Christians in early Christian
life were being oppressed and were being deprived of their right to
freedom of religion. In recent time, the Christian people in China
cannot practice their religion freely because the government is
banning them from doing so. This is being demonstrated by Sherwood
who states: “the persecution of Christians in China is the worst it has
been for more than a decade, with at least 50 million people expected
to experience some form of repression this year as the government
tightens its controls over religious worship, according to a global
monitoring body” (Sherwood). Here, the author employs statistics in
his article to affirm his argument that the oppression toward the
Christian people is increasing for a long time. The author mentioning
fifty million people are oppressed show the great extent of
persecution toward Christians over a decade. The concept behind
having fifty million people are being mistreated for holding on to their
faith and not converting to any other religion show how Christians are
determinant and consistent about their religion and that they would
accept death but not changing their religion. Furthermore, the author
uses the comparative degree in his article by stating “the worst it has

been” to show that persecution towards Christian is much more
dreadful than towards any other different religions.   Christians
are not only deprived of practicing their religion with freedom in
China and Egypt but also in India and North Korea The persecution of
Christian in India can be seen as Sherwood writes: “It’s shocking
that India – the country which taught the world the way of ‘no-
violence’ – now sits alongside the likes of Iran on our World Watch
List. For many Christians in India, daily life is now full of fear –
totally different from just four or five years ago” (Sherwood). Here,
the author used the word “shocking” to attract people’s sympathy
toward the Christian people since they are even persecuted in the
a country that calls for no violence. In addition, mentioning the phrase
“daily life” shows that the brutality toward the Christian people is a
the continuous event that does not stop, but increases every day. The
the author compared the degree of persecution toward Christians in the
last five years ago to show that it is getting worse and worse and to
get the audience's attention to this threatening issue. Furthermore,
living in a country that teaches non-violence but also persecutes
Christians give evidence that shows how the Christians are ignored as

a minority among the Indian population, also it is arguable that
Christians in India are oppressed because there are different Gods the
Indian People worship that the Christians will refuse to believe in, as
a result of hatred from the Indian people may arouse toward the
Christians as it happened in The Roman Empire when they mistreated
the Christians for not believing in their Gods. Along with India,
believers in Christ in North Korea are also punished for their faith.
The persecution of Christians in North Korea is illustrated by
Sherwood since he states: “North Korea tops the World Watch List
for the 18th year in a row, with 10 other countries categorized as
having “extreme” levels of persecution” (Sherwood). The author
mentioned the “World Watch List” to prove that persecution is
happening everywhere in the world, not just in some countries. He
also uses the adjective “extreme “to show how awful is persecutions
toward Christians in our world. In addition, mentioning Korea “Tops
the World” affirms the belief that Christians in the whole world are
being persecuted. Furthermore, this demonstrates that Christians are
deliberately being oppressed in many countries of the world. As a

the result, Christians are being persecuted throughout different ages and
in the whole world.

As an Egyptian girl who lived in Egypt for 13 years, I have
faced many kinds of persecutions since I am a Christian. In my
school, there were always discriminations between Muslim females
and Christian Females. For instance, if a Christian female or a Muslim
female doesn’t wear their school uniform, only the Christian female gets
punished and the other one is left free. Discrimination against
Christians is a huge issue the whole world should give attention
because as human beings we should have the right of freedom to have
faith in any religion. I believe that a country that has people who
think they defend their religion by persecuting Christians is a country
that needs improvement in education. As students, we learn
everything in school, then after we graduate, we apply what we learn
in school in the real world. In Egypt, Christian students are being
oppressed by being forced to memorize some parts of the Quran since
these parts are major sections of the Arabic Language exams. People

may not see this as a kind of persecution since persecution in their
minds means killing or shooting people with guns. However, it is still a
type of mistreatment that Christian students must deal within their
daily life. Sherwood, Ezz and Walsh emphasized in their articles that
Christians are being persecuted in many different countries in the
world, they also mentioned that the problem is getting worse and
worse every day. Each country should give the people their right to
freedom of religion, should avoid discriminations in education by
removing anything that may allow the students to have the concept
that there are minorities and majorities. The curriculums should reveal
equality between all the members in the society.

5 Egyptian Artist:

Egypt has been a creative hub for different artists throughout history,
and today, we have a lot of promising talents in the art scene. In this
article, we decided to focus on painters, and particularly those who
didn’t just settle down for just painting on a canvas. Instead, they
went out of the box bringing creative forms of art into reality. Here
are six inspiring artists we stumbled upon. Whether they’ve already
creatively branded themselves, or they’re still making their way
through the industry, we promise you’ll be astonished.
1. Manar Al Sharkawi
Sharkawi ditched the traditional canvas world and decided to leave
her vibrant bohemian print on other mediums. Other than her
customized mobile phone cases and the colorful mandalas on
notebooks, she’s most well-known for her wonderful murals. Who
needs a small canvas when there’s a wall free of boundaries?

2. Farah Omar
Besides her fine gold jewelry, Farah Omar offers a variety of hand-
painted pure silk scarves. Her delicate products are more like
masterpieces that will add some “très chic” to your wardrobe.

3. Salma Tarek
Tarek also played around with furniture, however, Robabikya’s
the concept is totally different. As obvious as it sounds, the creative artist
renovates wooden oriental chairs and stools with her magical brush
strokes.

 4. Farah El Araby
The young artist who recently started Araby’s Art merges her art
with nature’s own paintings. Her paintings on the triangular canvases
look so real and vivid against the actual views.

5. Nadine Suleyman
Wearing art, not just a label, is the concept behind Suleyman. The
self-taught artist brands her work as wearable art that reflects the
persona of the customer. Every t-shirt is one of a kind, specially
customized for customers who sit and have a friendly talk with
Suleyman at first. Their chit chat inspires her brush that randomly
makes its way over the fabric, resulting in doodles that tell stories
rather than anything else.

And that is what these ladies do for me. They inspire me with their
story. They center me. They gently shine with who they are and share
the guts of their soul with the world. I don't absorb any of it. I stand
next to it. Their artwork invokes memories I might have lost and their
natural conversation with their skill inspires me to work on my

relationship with my skill as well. Just looking at their art, I can soak
in memory. My own memory. It invokes my energy and I can mirror
what I find within as I stare at their work. It touches on my own
thoughts, it brings to life something that might have needed to be
dusted off. Meditating on their work inspires me to be better, so I can
continue on my journey.

3 quotes about racism:

1“An eye for an eye makes the world blind.” – Mahatma Gandhi

2“At the heart of racism is the religious assertion that God made a
creative mistake when He brought some people into being.” –
Friedrich Otto Hertz

3“For it isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And
it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.” – Eleanor
Roosevelt
